The studio begins with something that remains unresolved after the immediate task is over. A durable question is broad enough to generate more than one artifact, but specific enough to guide inquiry.

Questions are not branding devices. They are the stable center around which investigations, experiments, and publications can change.

Investigate

Learn enough to form a model.

Investigation means observing, reading, comparing, connecting, and identifying the relationships that make a system behave as it does.

The goal is not exhaustive certainty. It is a model clear enough to test, challenge, and revise.

Experiment

Build something that tests the model.

An experiment may be software, hardware, a publication methodology, a prototype, a dataset, or a new way of organizing information.

The medium is secondary. The experiment exists to make the model encounter reality.

Publish

Share what you've learned so the work can continue.

Publishing is a verb, not a format. A software release, essay, book, technical report, open-source repository, or monitoring issue can all be publications.

Publishing exposes the current understanding, preserves provenance, invites correction, and gives the next cycle somewhere to begin.
